Civil society speaks up for human rights in the Global Compact on Migration

On 8 and 9 May, the first Thematic consultation for the Global Compact on Migration took place at the United Nations Palais in Geneva, focusing on “Human Rights of all Migrants, social inclusion, cohesion, and all forms of discrimination, including racism, xenophobia and intolerance”.

New Movement Report and Scorecards

In 2016, the MADE civil society network published the first edition of the Movement Report, providing an assessment of progress on civil society’s 5-year 8-point Plan of Action in its first two years, i.e. from the 2013 UN High Level Dialogue through September 2015. Building on the input of civil society actors, MADE has now published a second edition of the Movement Report, providing a commentary on further progress through the Plan’s third year, from October 2015 through December 2016.

Observation Mission to Agadez, Niger

From 20 to 30 October 2016, MADE Africa coordinator Caritas Senegal organized a joint observation mission to one of the migrant centers run by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Agadez, Niger. Working in partnership with other organizations, the mission’s aim was to monitor the implementation of one of the post-Valetta projects funded by the EU Emergency Trust Fund for Africa (EUTF) and more specifically to observe to what extent the rights of migrants and their freedom of movement are respected in accordance with the Protocols of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

MADE, evaluated (twice) and moving forward

With the first three years of the Migration and Development (MADE) Civil Society Network ending in early 2017, two independent consultants conducted formal assessments of the work of the MADE programme from 2014 - 2016. The first consultant was hired by the European Commission, completing her Results Oriented Monitoring (ROM) Evaluation report in September 2016. The second consultant evaluator, retained as one of the commitments within the design of the MADE programme, completed her evaluation in March 2017. The objectives of both evaluations were to gather lessons learned and suggestions for the future of MADE from partners as well as from other stakeholders, particularly those that have worked with MADE in some capacity.

Taking Stock of Valletta

On 8/9 February 2017, four senior representatives of African and European civil society were invited to attend a Senior Officials’ Meeting in Malta, which took stock of the state of implementation of the Joint Valletta Action Plan (JVAP), conceived in November 2015.

ICMC Europe endorses recommendations to better protect children in migration

Based on the discussions, research, expertise and recommendations put forward by stakeholders at the “Lost in migration” conference, including the findings of the SUMMIT report on missing migrant children, the conference developed forward looking operational and policy recommendations to policy makers.
