ICMC Europe/MADE photo competition winners announced!

English

Earlier this spring, ICMC Europe and MADE launched a photo competition around the theme of ‘Untold stories: how migrants contribute to human and economic development’.

The photo competition aimed to showcase how migrants contribute to the economic, social and human well-being of their communities and countries of origin, heritage and residence, bringing to light their too often untold and unheard stories of migration.

We received applications from around the world, portraying individuals whose migration stories depict a wide array of situations, complex emotions and adaptation strategies.

One winner and 10 finalists were selected by a jury composed of ICMC staff (see the photo gallery).

The photographer wins paid accommodation and travel to the GFMD Civil Society Days 2015.

Through their stories, the subjects in the photographs remind us that any migration story impacts both the individual and the societies that they leave behind and move to.

For the individual migrant, learning a new language, experiencing culture shock, getting over prejudices and adapting to new circumstances and environments is both fulfilling and challenging.

For the host societies, the arrival of new skills, ideas and ways of cooperating and thinking create new avenues for reflection and can create positive social change if accompanied by well-designed inclusive policies aimed at welcoming individuals and helping communities flourish.

The selected photos will be exhibited first in Brussels during the 2015 European Development Days, on 3 and 4 June 2015 and then in Istanbul on 12-13 October 2015 during the GFMD Civil Society Days.

The MADE team and ICMC Europe thanks all participants and congratulates the selected winner and finalists!
